JOURNAL | The Indispensable Women In Coffee
Lykke wouldn't be a thing without all the hard working and epic women. From our Swedish headquarters in Hökarängen to the coffee scouts and partner farmers in Uganda.
Coffee plays a huge role in the economy of many tropical countries and provide livelihood for 25 million families across the globe On a global perspective, women are the backbone of agriculture, not least in the coffee industry. It is estimated that 70% of positions are filled by women: from fieldwork and picking to sorting and processing. However, most of these women aren’t given equal opportunities as their male counterparts, such as education, financial resources, ownership of land, senior positions – the list goes on.
"So by emphasizing and working with a majority of women, we help the fight to even out those numbers"
70% is a big, big number. However, coffee farming all around the globe is like much else in life: run by men. In fact, less than a third of coffee farms in the world are female-operated.
So by emphasizing on and working with a majority of women, we help the fight to even out those numbers. This year we're initiating a new partnership with a women-led farmer society close to our washing station. Stay tuned for more 🌈
